'Bad Boys for Life' Surprises with One of the Best MLK Weekend Grosses Ever
Tuesday Jan 21, 2020
Tuesday Jan 21, 2020
The first big-time winner of 2020 is 'Bad Boys for Life', which had the second-highest Martin Luther King Jr. weekend gross ever, trailing only 'American Sniper.' In a world where delayed sequels often fail, 'Bad Boys for Life' is one of the few that works.
However, 'Dolittle' did not work...at all. The $175 million production is the first major disaster of 2020, showcasing a whole lot of bad on many accounts. We discuss all this and more on this week's episode of The MovieBabble Podcast!

'1917' Wages War on the Box Office as 'Underwater' Sinks Fast
Sunday Jan 12, 2020
Sunday Jan 12, 2020
We're now in the middle of January, which means that, instead of talking about 2020 movies like 'Underwater' or 'Like a Boss', we'd rather talk about movies that came out at the end of 2019 like '1917', which opened well in its first weekend of wide release.
The film is riding on a high after winning plenty of awards and being nominated for many more. But is the film actually good? Is it more than its one-take gimmick? We discuss this and more on this week's episode of The MovieBabble Podcast!

The big news of the weekend: 'The Rise of Skywalker' sucks. (Please don't hurt us.) The capper to the new Disney trilogy is, as we see it, a big misfire in a lot of ways, from plenty of script rewrites to a nonsensical story with baffling additions to lore, we break down why Episode 9 falls apart. (SPOILERS to follow!)
In other news, 'Cats' is batshit insane, and we struggle to put words to how bizarre it is. All this and more on this week's episode of The MovieBabble Podcast!

'Jumanji: The Next Level' continued the success of the revamped Jumanji franchise, opening to over $210 million worldwide. After just a few days in theaters, it is well on its way to becoming another big moneymaker for Sony. The same can't be said for Clint Eastwood's 'Richard Jewell', which really, REALLY struggled in its opening weekend.
Elsewhere, 'Frozen II' surpassed the $1 billion mark, 'Black Christmas' exists, and 'Uncut Gems' starts its theatrically release. All this and more on this week's episode of The MovieBabble Podcast!

Monday Dec 09, 2019
Monday Dec 09, 2019
Because the entire movie industry has decided that the first weekend in December is a dumping ground of some kind, we have the exact same top five at the box office this week as we did last, and the fates of these films have not changed much. 'Frozen II" continues to be a juggernaut, 'Knives Out' is very successful, and 'Ford v Ferrari', 'A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood', and 'Queen and Slim' are all still finding their audiences. (And 'Playmobil: The Movie' opened to record lows, which everyone saw coming.)
But the big story this weekend was 'Marriage Story' dropping on Netflix to rave reviews and much discourse, as well as Amazon Studios making a bid with 'The Aeronauts', which is a movie that exists.
After covering those films, Brennan and Nick look at The Critics' Choice Awards nominees, offering their opinions on what the nominations might mean for the Oscar race.

Thanksgiving is always a great time for movies, and this year was no different as the holiday week proved very beneficial to all films, especially 'Frozen II', 'Knives Out', and 'Queen and Slim', which all found their audiences to one degree or another. We discuss their successes and what they mean moving forward.
Collin and Nick also look ahead to a weird start of December, which includes 'Marriage Story' opening on Netflix as well as 'Playmobil: The Movie' opening in theaters. Movies, amirite? All this and more on this week's episode of The MovieBabble Podcast!

The never-ending winning streak for Disney continues with 'Frozen II', which opened to over $350 million in its opening weekend worldwide. With the holidays coming up, Disney is most likely looking at its 6th billion dollar movie of the year.
While not opening on the same scale, 'A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood' is opening to widespread acclaim, and a decent start to its theatrical run as well. And with movies like 'The Irishman', 'Dark Waters', and 'Waves' all opening, the next wave of Oscar hopefuls is about to take shape. We cover all this and more on this week's episode of The MovieBabble Podcast!
